From the 11th century onwards, a series of Berber dynasties arose.[\[32\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morocco#cite_note-36)[\[33\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morocco#cite_note-37)[\[34\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morocco#cite_note-38) Under the [Sanhaja](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanhaja) [Almoravid dynasty](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almoravid_dynasty) and the [Masmuda](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masmuda) [Almohad dynasty](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almohad_dynasty),[\[35\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morocco#cite_note-39) Morocco dominated the Maghreb, [al-Andalus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Andalus) in [Iberia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iberian_Peninsula), and the western Mediterranean region. From the 13th century onwards the country saw a massive migration of the [Banu Hilal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banu_Hilal) Arab tribes. In the 13th and 14th centuries the [Merinids](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merinid_Dynasty) held power in Morocco and strove to replicate the successes of the [Almohads](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almohad_Caliphate) through military campaigns in Algeria and Spain. They were followed by the [Wattasids](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wattasid_dynasty). In the 15th century, the [Reconquista](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reconquista) ended Muslim rule in Iberia and many [Muslims](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muslim) and [Jews](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Jews_in_Morocco) fled to Morocco.[\[36\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morocco#cite_note-brit-40)

[Portuguese](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portugal) efforts to control the Atlantic sea trade in the 15th century did not greatly affect the interior of Morocco even though they managed to control some possessions on the Moroccan coast but not venturing further afield inland.
