A lot of projects launch the token first, build a community around the token second, and only then start looking for something useful for the token to do. That approach can generate attention quickly. But it also creates a pretty obvious problem: once the incentives disappear, there may be nothing left underneath. That is one reason SL Labs caught my attention. The interesting question here isn’t simply whether blockchain can be added to healthcare. We already know blockchain can be attached to almost anything. The better question is: **Can an onchain economy grow around products and services that people would actually want even without the crypto layer?** That is a much harder test. Healthcare Is Not an Easy Web3 Category --------------------------------------- Healthcare sounds like an obvious industry for blockchain. There is valuable data. There are identity problems. There are fragmented systems. AI needs better datasets. Users want more ownership and transparency. On paper, it fits perfectly. In reality, healthcare is probably one of the hardest industries Web3 could choose. Medical information is sensitive. Accuracy matters. Regulation matters. Bad data can have real consequences. And unlike purely financial DeFi applications, a healthcare product cannot hide weak utility behind token incentives forever. If the underlying service is bad, people simply will not use it. That is why I think projects in this category should be judged differently. The blockchain is not the product. **The product has to work first.** Where SL Labs Gets Interesting ------------------------------ SL Labs is building around AI, health-related data, devices, and digital services rather than presenting blockchain as the entire reason the ecosystem exists. Its broader ecosystem includes products such as VetDental AI, MediReport and SL Watch, alongside THOR as the community participation layer. Those products address very different parts of the ecosystem, but they share an important idea: digital health systems become more useful when data, services and users can interact inside a larger network. That is a more interesting model than simply putting health records onchain and calling it innovation. The real opportunity is coordination. Devices create information. AI can analyze information. Applications turn analysis into something useful. Economic infrastructure can coordinate how services are accessed and paid for. Blockchain becomes one piece of that system rather than the entire story. AI Makes the Data Question Even More Important ---------------------------------------------- Everyone is talking about AI now, especially AI in healthcare. But AI has a very basic dependency that marketing sometimes ignores: **good AI requires good data.** Not just more data. Better data. Structured data. Reliable data. Data with useful context. Data generated in ways that can actually support meaningful analysis. This makes healthcare particularly interesting because the quality of the information matters much more than raw volume. If SL Labs can connect real devices, useful health applications and AI analysis into a coherent ecosystem, then the data layer becomes potentially much more valuable than a typical Web3 “data marketplace.” That is where I think the long-term thesis becomes interesting. The value isn’t just owning data. It is creating an environment where data can actually do something. The Token Should Be Infrastructure, Not the Reason to Participate ----------------------------------------------------------------- This is also why I prefer thinking about $SL as part of the infrastructure rather than the center of the ecosystem. A healthy crypto economy should ideally work in this direction: **useful service → real usage → economic activity → token utility** Not: **token → incentives → users → hopefully a product later** That order matters. If people use an AI service because it is genuinely useful, then an economic layer has something real to settle. If people interact only because they expect rewards, activity becomes much more fragile. The strongest Web3 economies will probably be the ones where users could understand the value proposition even if you removed the price chart. Healthcare is a good place to test that idea. Where THOR Fits Into the Picture -------------------------------- Then there is THOR. THOR is the SL Labs Ambassador Hub, where users can participate through missions, check-ins and points. At first glance, that might look like a completely separate community campaign. I think it makes more sense when viewed as the participation layer around the wider ecosystem. Not everybody joining an early project is going to build an AI model or operate medical hardware. Most people need a simpler entry point. A mission system gives the community a way to: learn about the ecosystem, stay involved, complete activities and build a history of participation. That is useful as long as the community does not confuse participation points with guaranteed financial rewards. For me, the interesting part of THOR is not “click tasks and earn points.” It is that it gives normal users a way to follow and interact with a project that is trying to build something much larger than a quest platform. Web3 Needs More Projects That Start Outside Web3 ------------------------------------------------ This may be the biggest lesson. Crypto has spent years trying to invent reasons for the rest of the world to come onchain. Maybe the better approach is to start with something people already need. Healthcare. AI services. Diagnostics. Data infrastructure. Then ask whether blockchain can improve coordination, incentives or settlement. That is a healthier direction because success does not depend entirely on crypto speculation. The technology has to earn its place. If blockchain makes the system better, keep it. If it adds unnecessary complexity, users will eventually notice. That is the standard every real-world Web3 project should face. What I’m Watching Next ---------------------- SL Labs still has to prove that all of these pieces can grow together. Having products is not the same as achieving adoption. Having AI is not the same as delivering useful outcomes. Having a token is not the same as creating sustainable demand. Having a community is not the same as building retention. Those are the hard parts. But that is also why the project is worth watching. The thesis is not simply “healthcare on blockchain.” It is closer to: **Can useful health technology, AI, data and an onchain economic layer reinforce each other rather than exist as separate experiments?** If the answer eventually becomes yes, that is much more meaningful than another short-lived Web3 narrative. Final Thoughts -------------- The crypto industry does not need more projects that manufacture activity around a token. It needs more projects where the token sits behind something people actually use. That is what makes SL Labs interesting to me. The ambition is larger than an ambassador campaign and larger than a single AI product. It is an attempt to connect health technology, data, AI services, community participation and onchain economics into one ecosystem. Whether that vision works will depend on execution.
