GPS 38.701169089402406, -9.413546253158337 The Fort of Nossa Senhora da Conceição was located between Praia da Conceição and Almagreiros, in the Parish and Municipality of Cascais, District of Lisbon, in Portugal, having been completely destroyed.History It was built as part of the line of fortifications built between 1642 and 1648, by order of D. António Luís de Meneses, governor of the Cascais Stronghold, in the context of the Restoration War, and which extended between the Fort of São Julião da Barra and Cabo da Roca. The Baluarte do Rio do Bode, as it was known at the time, was started in 1642, and was already operational in 1646. Located on a rocky point at the eastern end of Cascais Bay, it crossed fires with the Cascais Citadel, "(…) thus embarrassing the approach of the enemy (…)". Having lost its military function, in the first half of the 19th century the fort was deactivated and its demolition began. Subsequently, in 1868, the Duke of Palmela acquired the property, continuing with its demolition in the same year, to make way for a chalet - Casa Palmela -, completed in 1873, designed by Thomas Henry Wyatt. Characteristics The fort had an irregular organic plan (adapted to the terrain), with a rectangular battery ending in a "V", on the cliff. On the opposite side were the accommodation, the kitchen, the magazine and the palamenta house, arranged in front of the parade ground. Above the buildings there was a terrace with a parapet, which was accessed by a staircase arranged from the battery platform. The crenellated wall that currently stands around "Casa Palmela" does not belong to the original complex of the fort, having been built when it was built, in case, in times of war, it was necessary to garrison the place with infantry troops.
