🧠 Why we are even further from an Open-Gamified Metaverse than we think…

📖 This is a wonderfully in-depth article talking about system trust and how NFTs are a break-point for interoperability. To walk from one game to the next and have items swap, skins transition, and powers translate will not be as easy as people often make it sound.

👾There is a huge hope that games will be what realize the vision of the metaverse but games are just one part of a much bigger puzzle. As an avid gamer of both digital and analog games I love the stories in the games. Yes there are the competitive games of chance such as poker and monopoly, which interests me less as creative games. It was only recently I discovered an intense love for chess. Chess is a story of battle where two commanders implement their game of ideas. Go is also a game of stories with warriors commanded on a battlefield of infinite possibilities.

🤪But to take a Go stone and place it on a Chess board would not work. Yes, the colors are similar being black and white (or in chess sometimes brown 😉) but to begin with the number of squares is different: 324 vs 64.

♟ Each stone has a fungible quality in Go. It operates exactly the same as another stone. Chess is completely different. Knights move in a very specific pattern completely different from a pawn or rook. These are truly non-fungible pieces since I cannot move a bishop as I would a knight. My middle game strategy will be entirely based on the patterns set in motion by the opening and how each non-fungible piece is put into play.

🕹This is a simple example exemplifying two ancient games with very specific rule sets and pieces that are representative of fungible (Go) and nonfungible (Chess) pieces. So how do we think that we would look to take a set of Go stones and play chess or take chess pieces and play on a 324 square Go board? Each system has trust parameters connected to an agreed upon rule set between player/players and system.

⏰We are racing to these big ideas but if we understand the logic of trust and how it applies to systems, rules, and abilities to create fair and fun parameters there is a lot to be accounted for with regards to the tech. When you enter the Roblox system there is an agreed upon ruleset even down to the gravity. Same with Minecraft and with GTA. To be honest I don’t even care about bringing items from one game to the next.

💡The metaverse will be the in-between. The down-time. The gutters between the panels. The place where collective ideas are born and then give way to portals into dreams. We are right to look at community as the key, the fandoms bringing us together whether it’s romance novels or Marvel movies. And once we build the tools for the in-between we will all be able to affect the collective consciousness of dreams and reality. This is where the “metaverse” will be born, in my opinion.

✨Welcome to the Land of Nod.
