I didn’t grow up there, I grew up in equatorial tropical countries. My dad was career military and everywhere he went, we went. I went to the US starting at high school. So, there I am, 15 and seeing America for the first time. There was everything I’d never had growing up, burger stands, full supermarkets - indoors!, miles and miles of paved roads, school supplies galore!, and, oh my god! Blond haired girls with blue eyes! Later, I traveled around and saw the back side of the cities…trashy streets, homeless people living in abandoned cars, soup kitchens, dilapidated deserted buildings, gangs that terrorized their own neighborhoods, drug users lying stoned in alleys and much, much more misery. That was back in the early 60’s and I’ve not really seen much improvement since. Now on to China. I’ve been living here for a little over 7 years and here’s what I’ve experienced. Cities that are newer than the newest cities of the US. Highways and bridges that are not falling apart. Technology in uses that the US is just beginning to experience, more middle-class families than the US ever had and its growing, zero to full implementation of basic infrastructure in less than a year, the most bullet trains in the world, a maglev train that’s not a show piece but part of daily transportation, and so many other things that I don’t have space to describe. And it has the same problems of trashy streets in the back side of town, dilapidated deserted buildings that were built within the last 5 years, homeless people, but no gangs, soup kitchens or other signs of misery. The poor in China are generally of the “clean and patched” type meaning they are just poor, not devastated human beings. So, do I think China is a first world country?
