# Hello (Web3) world

Hi, I’m Matt. I lead Product at BetaCarbon. Join me on my adventure as I explore the intersection of carbon markets, Product and web3.

### What?

This journal will focus on:

*   **🌏 Carbon credits and markets**. Carbon credits are not the _the_ answer to climate change. But for the world to reach net zero quickly, they need to be a _part_ of the answer. Today they are not working as they should. They need fixing and we’re running out of time.
    
*   **🏗 New product.** Building early stage Product is hard. Building early stage product around something that we can’t see or touch (CO2) is 10x harder. That’s what makes it so fun.
    
*   **🏢 Financing and ownership.** I’ve a growing personal interest in collective financing and ownership. Think crowd funding, collectives, community governance. I hope to spend more of my time thinking about how they enable climate action, even if they are not a core focus of our work at BetaCarbon.
    

**Where it really starts to get fun is when these three topics intersect with** **web3**. Web3 is a big part of the future, but at-scale climate action requires mass-participation, right now ⏰. Web2, though clearly imperfect, is a pre-existing freeway used by 60% of us. Web3 is the freeway that remains largely under construction, rocky and unwieldy to navigate (for most). It’s a tension I hope to explore here.

### Why?

Carbon markets and Web3 are two very complex and very fast moving domains. We’re also quickly running out of time to address climate change. I might be new to this space (<12 months), but by sharing my team’s journey - the learnings, challenges, ideas - I want to help others more rapidly navigate this complexity.

At a more personal level - writing helps to lend structure and solidify my thinking. It forces me to pause, to reflect and consider the bigger picture.

### Who?

I lead Product at [BetaCarbon](https://betacarbon.com), an Australian startup working at the intersection of blockchain and climate 🦋🌏. Our mission is to democratise access to high quality carbon credits - for business, consumers, investors - and ultimately accelerate the path to net-zero. In the coming months you’ll see our team launching two products out of stealth 🚀😬

Before this, I was a Product leader at [McKinsey](https://www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/mckinsey-digital/how-we-help-clients) and [Arup](https://arup.com). My strength lies in conceiving, building, then bringing new products to market. I’ve done this across banking, healthcare, infrastructure, cities, and property (and now carbon markets). I’m most excited when I’m working with bleeding edge technologies (e.g. Blockchain, IoT, data science), and alongside rockstar designers, engineers and marketers.
