# Japan City

This is a **list of** [**cities**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cities_of_Japan) **in** [**Japan**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan) sorted by [prefecture](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prefectures_of_Japan) and within prefecture by founding date. The list is also sortable by population, area, density and foundation date. Most large cities in Japan are [cities designated by government ordinance](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cities_designated_by_government_ordinance_of_Japan). Some regionally important cities are designated as [core cities](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Core_cities_of_Japan). [Tokyo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo) is _not_ included on this list, as the [City of Tokyo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_City) ceased to exist on July 1, 1943. Tokyo now exists as a special metropolis prefecture (都 _to_), with [23 special wards](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_wards_of_Tokyo) (with the same status of city) making up the former boundaries of the former city in the eastern half of the prefecture.
