# Digital Identity - The missing layer of Internet!

As Internet has evolved over the course of years and probably decades, there was always a missing layer in the form of Digital identity.

Digital identity was never considered to be a part of Internet evolution either through building of web pages, IMAP/SMTP protocols and even HTTP protocol.

Web 1.0 was more around fetching and consuming the information (read-only) from web pages with no consideration of user data and digital identity.

Web 2.0 made internet more interactive through intermediaries helping us to perform read, write and connect option. Social Media and Search Engines played vital role in the evolution of this Web 2.0 internet. Here the user data was managed by central intermediaries.

Now we are entering into the Web 3.0 internet where user can have firm control of their data with no central intermediaries. A decentralized, democratic and sovereign environment being created for Internet.

And for the first time in the history of internet we are having a self sovereign, decentralized digital identity which allows users to express themselves though a democratic governance.

Each of the Web2 and Web3 project should be equipped with such a self-sovereign identity solution which lets users decide how they want to express their identities.
