It is the metropolitan part of and the most populous constituent of the [Kingdom of Denmark](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danish_Realm),[\[N 9\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denmark#cite_note-23) a constitutionally [unitary state](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unitary_state) that includes the [autonomous territories](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_administrative_division) of the [Faroe Islands](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faroe_Islands) and [Greenland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenland) in the [North Atlantic Ocean](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Ocean). Metropolitan Denmark is the southernmost of the [Scandinavian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scandinavia) countries, lying south-west and south of [Sweden](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden), south of [Norway](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norway), and north of [Germany](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany), with which it shares a short border, Denmark's only land border.
