# You Don't Have to Write Simple

My blood boils every time a copywriter says this as a writing tip: Writing in simple language doesn't apply in some cases. What about writing in your journal? Writing poems? Stories? Notice how the things that I mentioned above — most use imagery, metaphors, and other figures of speech. Most use them because of artistic choices. Most use them because unlike writing in plain language, they know their work isn't meant to be understood by everyone.
