Although organ transplantation offers great potential for improving quality of life and reducing health care costs associated with end-stage organ failure, the numbers of organs available for transplant are insufficient (1). Between 1 and 1.5 million Chinese patients are placed on organ transplantation waiting lists every year, yet only less than 10% of them manage to receive an organ (2). Each year, cardiovascular events and traffic accidents result in 2.6 million death (3) and 109,000 (4) brain deaths in China, respectively. Because China claims one fifth of the total world population, it is clear that the Chinese population offers a large number of potential organ donors.
