Development on Terra began in January 2018, and its mainnet officially launched in April 2019. Singapore based Terraform Labs and Seoul based development team. Keeping in mind that previous innovations in the technology of money was bootstrapped by large payment networks (Alipay with Taobao, Paypal with eBay, Visa with banks), Terra was born with the support of the [Terra Alliance](https://medium.com/terra-money/state-of-the-terra-alliance-d7f3ff8f6411), 15 large e-commerce companies in Asia that collectively process 25 billion USD in annualized transaction volume and 45 million users. Technology ---------- LUNA uses [Cosmos SDK](https://cosmos.network/sdk) and  [Tendermint](https://tendermint.com/) BFT consensus. The top 130 validators with the highest total stake are selected in a cycle per block . Validators propose blocks, vote on their validity, and add each new block to the chain in exchange for staking rewards from transaction fees. Users can stake their Luna to validators in exchange for staking rewards. Validators also play an important [role in the governance](https://docs.terra.money/docs/learn/protocol.html) of the Terra protocol. Rewards include gas as well as swap fees ( of Stable coins)  . **Consensus** A validator called a proposer is chosen to submit a new block of transactions. 1. Validators vote in two rounds on whether they accept or reject the proposed block. If a block is rejected, a new proposer is selected and the process starts again. 2. If accepted, the block is signed and added to the chain. 3. The transaction fees from the block are distributed as [staking reward](https://docs.terra.money/docs/full-node/manage-a-terra-validator/faq.html)s to validators and delegators. Proposers get rewarded extra for their participation. Terra LUNA chain is built with [golang](https://github.com/terra-money/core) and is opensource. javascript, [python SDK](https://terra-money.github.io/terra.py/) are available for client codes to query or interact with the LUNA chain.  Rust and [CosWASM ( Cosmos WASM )](https://www.cosmwasm.com/) for Smartcontracts. **Interoperability** Under [Terra.Money](https://www.terra.money/) theme Terra has developed a web of options for Stablecoins ,DeFi,and NFT. [AXELAR](https://axelar.academy/ecosystem/introduction-to-axelar/)  cross chain gateway and transfer protocls for DeFi apps [Shuttle](https://github.com/terra-money/shuttle) is Terra - Ethereum bridge [LayerZero](https://medium.com/layerzero-official/layerzero-the-future-transport-layer-of-ibc-32db19b1f253)  is a messaging transport layer for smart contracts to communicate between chains and  uses a hub -spoke arrangement rather then chain-to-chain of IBC Kadena ($KDA) is a POW blockchain with bridges to many other chains Terra has on chain governance which requires the holder of Luna to submit a proposal by depositing some Luna. A minimum of 512 Luna is needed for the proposal to be valid for voting. Proposal for changing any blockchain parameter is automatically implemented if the proposal is passed. Parameter changes do not need any coding changes. More complex proposals need the community to get them implemented. Terra core team may do major code changes and take the implementation ahead.
