Hello friend, I just finished recording an episode of cryptonatives today with yet another legend of the space. We're approaching release soon, I'm so excited !Anyway enough about me, let's talk about securing your NFTs for ethernity 👇Based on my experience, there are 3 types of NFTs:The Ethereum Evergreen → minted via code and stored onchainThe Manifold Goodie → minted on manifold and stored on arweaveThe IPFS Freebie → minted on a platform (think Opensea, KnownOrigin, etc.) and stored on IPFSToday I show you how to fix your IPFS Freebies (read this to learn why).What are we dealing with ? 🤔Here is a little drawing that depicts the process of minting an NFT on KnownOrigin:That's crazy convoluted wtf !? (was my reaction) So what's stored on the blockchain when minting on KO is a link pointing to another link ? Yes. How fucking mad is that? Like what the fuck is wrong with platforms? How is any of this "permanent" ? They didn't even use the standard ipfs://fileID at the time ! (but rather a gateway link: https://ipfs.infura.io/ipfs/fileID)Opensea Metadata Documentation So if Infura decides to take this link down, my NFT is gone. Poof...How do we fix it ? 🛠Okay, so our aim is to replace every instance of https://ipfs.infura.io/ipfs/fileID with ar://fileID You would typically need to follow this very long guide (but don't do it):Download arkb from githubCreate an arweave walletBridge ETH to AR (Arweave) to this new walletGet the private key for the walletSet it as the key to use for arkbuse the "arkb deploy" command to deploy our image on arweavereplace the infura link with our new arweave link inside the metadatause the "arkb deploy" command to deploy the metadata on arweaveCall the setURI function with the new metadata (in my case it's here)Remember you need to be the creator of the NFT in order to do this ... You didn't read all that right ? Yeah I figured. The truth is, this is an issue thousands of artists face each year. There needs to be an easier way, and there is.
