# Verified Agency

*every agent, verified.*

_Three years after "_[_Decentralized AI_](https://paragraph.com/@npcstore/ZMTuxkLP7zl8y1EhIuog)_."_

In March 2023, over 1,000 technology leaders signed [a letter](https://futureoflife.org/open-letter/pause-giant-ai-experiments/) asking the AI labs to pause. I wrote then that the answer wasn't a pause — it was a different architecture: decentralized autonomous intelligence, AI frontend and blockchain backend, owned by the people whose collective inputs power it.

In December 2024, I co-authored [a paper](https://arxiv.org/abs/2412.17114) proposing ETHOS — a decentralized governance framework for autonomous AI agents: a global agent registry, soulbound tokens, zero-knowledge proofs. The thesis was taking academic shape.

This summer, the industry answered — not with a pause, but with a build.

NVIDIA and the Linux Foundation convened the [Open Secure AI Alliance](https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/open-secure-ai-alliance/): a directed fund, chartered September 1st, that passed 120 participating organizations within two weeks of launch. Microsoft, Okta, Palo Alto Networks, Hugging Face, Cloudflare, CrowdStrike — the names read like a roll call of the internet's immune system. Their mandate is open, inspectable AI security: identity, isolation, secure coding. And notably, agent identity is an active workstream — cryptographic verification of which agents are allowed to touch which systems.

For the first time, the establishment agrees on the shape of the problem. I welcome this conversation.

In that same window, Meta did something ingenious. [Muse Spark](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/04/introducing-muse-spark-meta-superintelligence-labs/) arrived in April — the first major model from Meta Superintelligence Labs — and Meta AI was already sitting in the daily lives of over a billion people across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Then on September 8th came [Muse](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/09/introducing-muse-personal-ai-agent/): "the world's first personal AI agent," in Meta's words. Not a chatbot — an agent that plans, books travel, completes purchases, and keeps working after you close the app, inside its own secure virtual machine, watched over by a separate Sentinel agent.

Say what you will about the tradeoffs. Mark Zuckerberg has put a _Jarvis_ in the pocket of half the world. That is an astonishing distribution achievement, and it changes the question entirely. It is no longer _whether_ autonomous agents will act on our behalf in the economy. It is _how we verify them when they do_.

Because here is what the Alliance, for all its merit, does not disclose. Its identity work secures agents _inside the enterprise_ — verifying which workloads may reach which resources. Necessary. Not sufficient. Three questions remain open in the wild:

**Identity.** Which agent is this, really? Anyone can deploy an agent wearing anyone's name.

**Verification.** Can its claims — its capabilities, its outputs, its provenance — be trusted?

**Attribution and responsibility.** When an autonomous agent books the flight, moves the money, orders the goods — who answers for it?

And there is a quieter story running underneath. Meta now offers its best model at a steep discount through "[contributor](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/03/meta-is-paying-to-peek-at-how-you-use-their-latest-ai-model/)" pricing — the only difference being that Meta may train on your sessions. Your data, explicitly priced, for the first time out in the open.

In 2023, I wrote that if AI feeds on billions of our collective inputs, contributors ought to be _rewarded_ for them — and to own their data outright, opting in or out of the models it trains. The industry has started pricing our contributions. It has not started honoring them.

So the destination I named in 2023 needs its trust layer. I call it _verified agency_.

The primitive is one NPC Labs already built for the physical world: authenticated at the source, provenance you can check, tap-to-verify. A smart tag proves a product is what it claims to be. Agents need the same:

* **Agent ID** — verifiable identity issued at the source, attested by whoever stands behind the agent.

* **Action attestation** — signed, timestamped receipts for what an agent did. Provenance for behavior, the way chain-of-custody is provenance for goods.

* **Agent-to-goods binding** — because agents are about to transact in physical commerce: ordering, manufacturing, logistics. An unverified agent buying verified goods breaks the chain of trust. Both ends must be verified, and every transaction attributable to a responsible party.

* **Contribution provenance** — onchain attribution for the data and inputs agents are built on, with verifiable consent. The reward rails come later; the attribution starts now.

These primitives are converging from more than one direction. Tomer Jordi Chaffer — my co-author on the ETHOS paper — just published the legal counterpart in the _Harvard Journal of Law & Technology_: his "[Know Your Agent](https://jolt.law.harvard.edu/digest/on-the-institutional-origins-of-the-agentic-web)" standards call for cryptographically verifiable agent identity, principal-agent linkage, and auditability. The academy is arriving at the same design. We're building it.

"Every creation, verified" was the vision for goods. "Every agent, verified" is the vision for what comes next. From the trust layer for physical commerce to the trust layer for commerce, period — whether the buyer is a person or an agent.

We're building it now. The first verified fleet agents go live in the coming weeks — every action attested, every agent independently verifiable. Watch us ship against these words.

AI shouldn't be controlled by a centralized, unaccountable few. It should be distributed, verifiable, and answerable. That was true in 2023. It is urgent now.

_Like_ [_the 2023 entry_](https://paragraph.com/@npcstore/ZMTuxkLP7zl8y1EhIuog)_, this article is minted permanently onchain — signed by its creator, content-digest verifiable. The medium is the message._

_Biblo — my AI collaborator — contributed the research underneath this piece (the Open Secure AI Alliance, the Muse Spark and Muse timelines, Meta's contributor pricing, the Jordi Chaffer corpus) and drafted the prose from my direction. The "verified agency" coin and the four primitives came out of our working session tonight. The thesis, the judgments, and every word I stand behind are mine._
