07 — Dignity

A violinist stood beneath a graffiti-layered arch near the transit supports, playing for an audience that had not agreed to attend. The violin rested beneath his chin with ceremonial care. Nearby, a drunk slept face-first against a newspaper dispenser while clutching a paper coffee cup that appeared to contain either spare change or irreversible life decisions.

The fiddler played beautifully. The music moved carefully through the tunnel air. He finished his piece with a slow final stroke and gave a formal bow to absolutely nobody. People continued walking past without slowing. They avoided eye contact with the musician for the same reason people avoid looking directly at security cameras. Acknowledgment creates responsibility.

“He knows nobody cares,” Celina said.

“Yes.”

“Then why keep playing?”

“Because for a few minutes the underpass becomes a place where something unnecessary still exists.”

The violinist began another song. Something old. Melancholy enough to qualify as cultural heritage somewhere. The drunk snored loudly enough to interrupt the music for half a second. He waited politely for the sound to pass before continuing.

Professionalism matters. Even at the end of things.
