# NFTs in Politics? 🤮

The United States Federal Election Commission (FEC) has given the green light for political campaigns to use non-fungible tokens (NFTs) for fundraising efforts. Another bold move for mass adoption?

In my opinion, the jury is out.

FEC stated that it was "permissible" for DataVault Holdings to send NFTs to political campaign contributors without violating rules on corporate contributions.

This isn't the first time FEC was rubbing shoulders with crypto; back in 2019 the FEC had a similar advisory opinion on tokens, stating that certain ones were "materially indistinguishable from traditional forms of campaign souvenirs."

A lot of individuals, including DataVault's CEO Nathaniel Bradley, see the use of NFTs in political campaigns as a way to increase trust and transparency in elections.

The way I see it; this could go sideways really fast. You have an array of politicians that wouldn't even know it if an NFT hit them in the face, whereas on the opposite side of the aisle, you have politicians that are so pro-crypto that they may be able to pull a few shady strings behind a curtain to use illicit funds (as if that never happened) in their political campaign. All are to be discovered later on to wreak havoc on crypto.

Politics is dirty by design. Don't get me wrong; I'm all for regulation for mass adoption. I just think that this is similar to handing a kid a chainsaw to cut paper and hoping nothing bad would happen. I think we are too early for meddling in politics and crypto in the frame of campaign funding. We have a lot more hurdles to overcome before we chase this wild goose.
