**_Why 4844?_** To bring awareness to the upcoming [**EIP-4844**](https://eips.ethereum.org/EIPS/eip-4844), which has the potential to decrease fees by 100x for all rollups, It introduces a new transaction format by posting “data blobs” to L1.

Data sharding will still take a considerable amount of time to finish implementing and deploying. This EIP provides a stop-gap solution until then by implementing the transaction format that would be used in sharding, but not actually sharding those transactions.

**_Pros of EIP-4844 Include: 👇_**

*   **Data does not need to be stored by L1 nodes.**
    
*   **Data is not directly accessible in the EVM.**
    
*   **Since the EVM is not involved this means Ethreum can process more rollup data without sacrificing decentralization.**
    
*   **Intended to be fully compatible with the format that will be used in sharding.**
    
*   **Up to 100x cheaper fees right now without having to wait on Proto Dank Sharding.**
