Bitcoin nodes are responsible for verifying and transmitting transactions on the Bitcoin network. As the Bitcoin network grows, more nodes are needed to maintain a reliable and secure system. However, as DLT technology evolves, it is possible that new ways of verifying and transmitting transactions will be developed that do not require a centralized node. If this happens, it is likely that fewer or no [Bitcoin nodes](https://coinfea.com/what-is-lightning-network-how-do-i-use-it/) will be needed in the future. This could have serious consequences for the security of the Bitcoin network and could lead to its demise.
