# Pepe Unchained: Roadmap Phase 1

*Why Pepu needs a purpose and what is it? TLDR: Consumer.*

Dear Pepu Community,

Over the last few weeks we've spent less time asking what feature to build next and more time asking a much harder question.

**Why should Pepu exist five years from now?**
----------------------------------------------

Every blockchain eventually reaches this point. The technology works. The chain is live. But technology alone is never enough. If people don't have a compelling reason to choose your chain, they won't.

That realization became the starting point for Phase 1 of our roadmap.
We deliberately avoided rushing into another announcement full of buzzwords.

Instead, **_we started from scratch_**.

We explored different directions, challenged our own assumptions, spoke with builders, looked at successful ecosystems, and asked where crypto is actually heading instead of simply following whatever narrative is hot this month.

The first obvious candidate was AI.
-----------------------------------

**Agentic AI is everywhere right now.** Every week another project launches promising autonomous trading agents, AI wallets or machine-to-machine commerce.

It was tempting.
But after digging deeper we kept arriving at the same conclusion.

**AI is becoming a feature, not a destination.**

Builders don't wake up wanting an '**_AI blockchain_**'. They want **infrastructure that lets them build AI products.**

That's an important distinction.

We absolutely want AI applications to exist on Pepu. We just don't think Pepu itself should depend on one narrative staying popular forever.

**Gaming** was another obvious direction.
-----------------------------------------

Gaming is already one of the biggest entertainment industries in the world and digital ownership fits naturally with blockchain.

The challenge is that excellent gaming ecosystems already exist.
Projects like [**Immutable**](https://www.immutable.com/) and [**Ronin**](https://www.roninchain.com/) have spent years building relationships with studios and developers.

Rather than trying to become '**another gaming chain**', we'd rather become a place where games naturally fit alongside many other consumer experiences.

We also explored becoming a **SocialFi chain, a memecoin chain, a DeFi chain** and even **another general-purpose rollup.**

_Eventually something became obvious._

These aren't separate ideas.
They're all **consumer applications.**

People don't wake up excited to use a blockchain.

They wake up wanting to _trade a meme, play a game, collect something interesting, earn rewards_ or _use a product that solves a problem._

The blockchain **should disappear** into the background. The application should be what people remember. That was the turning point.

Instead of specializing in one vertical, Pepu should specialize in the people using those verticals.

That's what we mean when we say _consumer-first.
Not infrastructure first.
Not developer first._

Pepe Unchained will be a **Consumer-first** chain.
--------------------------------------------------

Our brand naturally fits this direction.
**Pepe** has always represented _internet culture, communities, creativity and participation._
Trying to compete directly with institutional infrastructure chains ignores our strongest advantage.

MAKE PEPU (& Web3) FUN AGAIN!!!

Instead, we want to build the best place for products that everyday users actually enjoy using.

Once the direction became clear, the next question was simple.

> What needs to exist before builders can create great consumer applications?

From this point forward every technical decision should answer one question.

Does this make it easier for someone to build?
Or easier for someone to use?

If the answer is no, it probably isn't important enough.
That means focusing on practical improvements rather than flashy announcements.

We expect this phase to include:

* Simpler onboarding for new users

* Social logins and account abstraction where possible

* Gas sponsorship so users don't immediately worry about transaction fees

*   Better developer documentation

* SDKs and templates that reduce development time

*   Better APIs and infrastructure

*   Improved explorers and analytics

* Easier deployment and testing experiences

The goal isn't to check boxes.
It's to remove friction.

A founder shouldn't spend two weeks learning our chain before writing their first contract.
A user shouldn't need to understand what an L2 is before enjoying an application.

If we can reduce both of those barriers, builders will ship faster and users will stay longer.

So with that, **Pepe Unchained is taking the direction to be a Consumer First chain.**

More updates soon!
