# Diversity in Ecosystems **Published by:** [Phil Kothe ](https://paragraph.com/@phil-kothe/) **Published on:** 2022-02-08 **URL:** https://paragraph.com/@phil-kothe/diversity-in-ecosystems ## Content In natural ecosystems, biodiversity is an important factor, contributing to ecosystem stability and resilience. Diversity can be divided into genetic diversity, the variations of genes found in one species. Species diversity, the number of different species in one ecosystem and above species-level diversity e.g. the variance of primary producers, primary and secondary consumers. Like biodiversity, ecology can be divided into subfields. From organismal Ecology, looking at the individual organism, Population Ecology, studying the group of individuals, Community Ecology, different interacting species, Ecosystem Ecology, community and physical environment, to Global Ecology, the study of global patterns. How can we evaluate the diversity of man-made digital ecosystems and look at it with an ecological lens? A company’s diversity can be measured by its product or income source diversification, which leads also to greater resilience against negative external factors. Also, it can be measured by the diversity of employees, e.g. ethnicity, gender, education level, … So, how could we measure the diversity of web3 ecosystems? Let’s have a look at Ethereum: Diversity of nodes (where and owned by) Diversity of dApps (different industries, e.g. DeFi, GameFi, Social, …) Ecology lens: Interaction between dApps (e.g. Ocean Marketplace with other Ocean Protocol services) Interaction with other web3 protocols (e.g. decentralized storage (Arweave, StorJ, Sia,, ..), other Smart Contract ecosystems (Polkadot, Cosmos, Solana, Elrond, Harmony…) Interactions with web2 Interactions with the real word (Oracle) ## Publication Information - [Phil Kothe ](https://paragraph.com/@phil-kothe/): Publication homepage - [All Posts](https://paragraph.com/@phil-kothe/): More posts from this publication - [RSS Feed](https://api.paragraph.com/blogs/rss/@phil-kothe): Subscribe to updates
