You might be wondering: why should we care about the world of Dreams? Here is the answer, Fox: it is our history, even if we have forgotten it.

To understand what we mean, heed the vision of Picnic, Lightning. He saw something in his sleep that he wishes to tell you about.

Read on.

Out of darkness
---------------

_There was a time when Foxes dreamt._

_Did you know that?_

_Perhaps you have not heard the stories._

_When our ancestors closed their eyes, their vision_

_Did not empty as ours does now._

_They saw more than black shadow._

_To fall asleep was to voyage to another world._

_A place in which the mind was not at rest but at play and_

_Our eyes wore no mask of darkness._

_Sleep was a city of lights and wild visions illumined_

_across cerebrum and cerebellum,_

_And one fine scientist – we have forgotten her name now –_

_said that lightning passed back_

_And forth across the corpus callosum as if in constant_

_Dizzying dance and that if you cared to look_

_There was sense in the pattern._

_You have heard too much of human dreams, perhaps._

_I can tell you it was nothing like that._

_Do you know that when the human dreams, they dream alone?_

_Every night, each one tumbles into private, separate fantasy which_

_Grades only slightly from the world of delusion._

_Foxes dreamt together. Each evening we climbed_

_Out of our brains and into seven realms in which we_

_Found not only each other but every Fox that has_

_Ever-lived and will-ever live, and the boldest of those_

_That told these stories spoke of Foxes that cannot be_

_And belonged to separate, fractal realms_

_Beyond reason._

_Last night, in my drab and artless sleep, I swear_

_I saw someone, something, some shape or form or_

_Silhouette – nothing more._

_A wrinkle in the darkness._

_When I woke this morning, I wondered_

_“Was that a dream – at least, the beginning of one?_

_Is this what it feels like to live with one’s eyes closed?”_

_Perhaps the visions we  have lost across our generations_

_are simply waiting on the other side of that darkness,_

_Asking to be found._

_I understand your laughter. Had you_

_Told me the same I would have chided you and perhaps_

_Smiled just as you are now. But I swear, my friend, I_

_Saw it. Pretend you believe me._

_Pretend for just a moment._

_What would it mean?_\*
