Mars, the fourth planet from the Sun, is known as the "Red Planet" due to its iron oxide-rich soil that gives it a reddish appearance. It has a thin atmosphere composed mostly of carbon dioxide, which contributes to its cold, dry environment. Mars is home to the largest volcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons, and the deepest canyon, Valles Marineris. Scientists are particularly interested in Mars because of evidence that liquid water may have once existed on its surface. Recent missions, including NASA's Perseverance rover, are investigating whether Mars ever harbored life and what its past climate was like. Despite its harsh conditions, Mars is often considered a candidate for future human colonization.
