The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed._ _27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”_ * * * God Works On A Timeline ----------------------- This passage is one of the most remarkable prophecies in the entire Bible. God gives Daniel a specific timeline. A detailed sequence of events stretching across centuries. Things that had not happened yet — rebuilding, an anointed one coming, that same anointed one being put to death, destruction and desolation following after. All of it spoken before any of it happened. I think we sometimes read prophecy and gloss over just how extraordinary it is. God is not making vague statements here. He is not speaking in broad strokes that could apply to anything. He is giving specific numbers, specific sequences, specific outcomes. And history bore every single one of them out. That should do something to our faith. The God we serve does not guess. He does not hope things go a certain way. He declares the end from the beginning and then watches it unfold exactly as He said. * * * The Anointed One ---------------- At the centre of this prophecy is a figure Daniel calls the Anointed One. The word in Hebrew is Mashiach. Messiah. God tells Daniel that from the decree to rebuild Jerusalem, a specific number of sevens will pass — and then the Anointed One will come. Then He will be cut off. Put to death. And will have nothing. We know who this is. Jesus came, was crucified, and in the eyes of the world at that moment appeared to have nothing. No throne. No kingdom. No army. Just a cross and a borrowed tomb. But what looked like the end was always part of the plan. The death of the Anointed One was not a tragedy that God scrambled to recover from. It was the very thing the whole timeline was moving toward. The atoning for wickedness, the end of sin, the bringing in of everlasting righteousness — all of it required that moment on the cross. God planned our rescue before we even knew we needed rescuing. * * * Built In Times Of Trouble ------------------------- There is a small phrase tucked into verse 25 that I do not want to rush past. _It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble._ The rebuilding happens. Jerusalem is restored. But it does not happen in easy, comfortable conditions. It happens in times of trouble. The restoration and the difficulty exist at the same time. This is so true to life. The things God rebuilds in us rarely get rebuilt in calm and easy seasons. The restoration usually happens in the middle of the hard. We are being put back together while the trouble is still present. The streets are going up while the enemy is still at the gates. That is not a sign that God has left the building. That is just how rebuilding works. It is messy and uncomfortable and it happens in real time, in real conditions, with real opposition. The trench was there to protect the work while it was still in progress. God covers what He is building in us the same way. * * * Decreed and Certain ------------------- What strikes me most about this whole passage is the certainty of it. Everything here is decreed. Decided. Settled. The transgression will be finished. The sin will end. The wickedness will be atoned for. Everlasting righteousness will come in. These are not possibilities — they are declarations. And they all point to Jesus. Every seventy sevens, every detail of this prophecy, every specific number and sequence — it all converges on one person and one event. The cross. The resurrection. The salvation that God planned from before the foundation of the world. We are living on the other side of that fulfilment. We get to read this prophecy knowing how it came true. We get to look back at what Daniel could only look forward to and say — yes, He came. Yes, He died. Yes, He rose. Yes, everything God decreed came to pass exactly as He said. That same certainty covers the promises He has made over your life. * * * What This Means For Us Today ---------------------------- This passage is not just history and prophecy. It is an anchor. When life feels chaotic and unpredictable, when the news is heavy and the world feels like it is unravelling — passages like this remind us that nothing is outside of God’s knowledge or control. He mapped out centuries of human history in a conversation with one man in the middle of the night. He is not surprised by anything happening in the world right now. He is not caught off guard by what is happening in your life right now. He works on a timeline that we can only see in part, and what we can see is enough to trust what we cannot. The end that is decreed will come. And for those who are in Christ — that end is not something to fear. It is the moment everything God promised finally arrives in full. * * * Walk On ------- God spoke this to Daniel centuries before any of it happened. Every single word came true. He is the same God today. What He has spoken over your life is just as certain. Just as decreed. Just as sure.
