In the wake of the recent Lebanon attacks, where personal electronic devices like pagers were compromised and used as weapons, the open movement—with its commitment to transparency, collaboration, and decentralisation—can offer crucial insights and solutions to improve device safety. Drawing inspiration from projects like SafeCast, we can approach the challenge from three core perspectives: Hardware, Software, and Community. Questions the Open Movement Should Ask:How can we design hardware with transparency, ensuring that devices can’t be secretly compromised?How can we leverage open-source software to develop secure, customisable communication systems that protect against remote hacking?How can we empower communities to audit and secure their own devices, creating trust through decentralised participation?What ethical frameworks should guide the use of open security technologies to prevent their misuse?How can we foster collaboration between communities, developers, and hardware producers to ensure long-term security for all?
