How you are sitting, or standing. Are you slouching or sitting straight? Are your hands relaxed or tense? Are your feet warm or cold? Is your breath deep and relaxed? *This is your Road.* Now notice that you are reading this and you might have an opinion on this what I am writing. You might find it agreeable, or maybe weird, funny, boring… or disagreeable. *This is your Map.* All of our lives are a juxtaposition between what we hold in our minds (the map) and what happens in actuality (the road) Our minds are an aggregate collection of our past. Think of your upbringing, your social and cultural context, your perceived gender, your beliefs and all that has happened to you to this point. Collectively, this is the map you use to view the world, and to traverse any road, metaphorically speaking. The road is a lot harder to define, since it doesn’t depend on all of the above. It is the *Actuality of things.* And to find the actuality, it still has to go through our senses, our minds and thought processes. And even if you use a machine to find the actuality of things, you still have to make sure what the frame of measurement is, and make it through the lens of what you know now. And since we are on the internet here, we all know that a whole lot of data is being produced by what people think or feel about *topic X.* Topic X being anything you can think of. Those are a lot of maps! Compare that with the idea that in a historical sense, science is very young. It is the [scientific method](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method) that tries to uncover “the territory”. And because of various reasons, uncovering the territory is very difficult, especially when it comes to our social behaviours. This blog then is about several observations on this juxtaposition, and how it affects our lives and how it influences us directly and indirectly. Let’s take a walk, shall we? ## Publication Information - [Road versus Map](https://paragraph.com/@roadvsmap/): Publication homepage - [All Posts](https://paragraph.com/@roadvsmap/): More posts from this publication - [RSS Feed](https://api.paragraph.com/blogs/rss/@roadvsmap): Subscribe to updates ## Optional - [Collect as NFT](https://paragraph.com/@roadvsmap/road-versus-map): Support the author by collecting this post - [View Collectors](https://paragraph.com/@roadvsmap/road-versus-map/collectors): See who has collected this post
