The first casualty of World War 1 was not a soldier, but a civilian. A Belgian woman was killed in the town of Liège on August 4, 1914, just hours after Germany declared war on Belgium.

Despite being known as "The Great War," World War 1 did not have the highest death toll in history. It is estimated that around 16 million people died during the conflict, which is certainly a staggering number, but other events in history such as the Spanish Flu epidemic, the Mongol Conquests, and World War II had higher death tolls.

Dogs played an important role in World War 1. They were used for a variety of tasks, including delivering messages, carrying supplies, and even attacking enemy soldiers.

The sinking of the Lusitania, a British passenger ship, by a German submarine in 1915, played a significant role in bringing the United States into the war. 1,198 people were killed, including 128 Americans.

World War 1 saw the first use of tanks in combat. The British introduced the first tanks in September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. While they were slow and unreliable, they helped break through German lines and pave the way for infantry advances.

The last surviving World War 1 veteran, Florence Green, passed away in 2012 at the age of 110. She served as a member of the Women's Royal Air Force.

Despite the technological advances made during the war, communication was still a major issue. Carrier pigeons were used extensively to deliver messages, with over 100,000 birds serving in the war effort
