They may identify as a combination of both genders, neither gender, or as a gender that is different from male or female. Non-binary is an umbrella term that encompasses a wide range of gender identities that fall outside of the traditional binary categories of male and female. Non-binary people have existed throughout history and in various cultures around the world, but they have only recently begun to gain greater recognition and acceptance in Western societies. Many non-binary people face discrimination and prejudice, and may experience difficulty finding acceptance and support from friends, family, and society at large. Non-binary individuals may use a variety of terms to describe their gender identity, including genderqueer, genderfluid, agender, and others. Some non-binary people may also use they/them pronouns instead of he/him or she/her pronouns, or other gender-neutral pronouns. It is important to note that non-binary people have unique experiences and identities, and should be treated with the same respect and dignity as anyone else. Gender identity is a deeply personal aspect of an individual's life, and everyone deserves the freedom and support to express their gender in a way that feels authentic to them. ## Publication Information - [Rosa Joao](https://paragraph.com/@rosa-joao/): Publication homepage - [All Posts](https://paragraph.com/@rosa-joao/): More posts from this publication - [RSS Feed](https://api.paragraph.com/blogs/rss/@rosa-joao): Subscribe to updates
