China is a [one-party state](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-party_state) led by the [Chinese Communist Party](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_Communist_Party) (CCP). The National People's Congress in 2018 altered the country's constitution to remove the two-term limit on holding the Presidency of China, permitting the current leader, [Xi Jinping](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xi_Jinping), to remain president of China (and General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party) for an unlimited time, earning criticism for creating [dictatorial](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dictator) governance.[\[204\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China#cite_note-BaturoElgie2019-222)[\[205\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China#cite_note-Kroenig2020-223) The [President](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China) is the titular [head of state](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_of_state), elected by the [National People's Congress](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_People%27s_Congress). The [Premier](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premier_of_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China) is the [head of government](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_of_government), presiding over the [State Council](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Council_of_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China) composed of four vice premiers and the heads of ministries and commissions. The incumbent president is [Xi Jinping](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xi_Jinping), who is also the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party and the [Chairman of the Central Military Commission](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chairman_of_the_Central_Military_Commission_\(China\)), making him China's [paramount leader](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paramount_leader_\(China\)). The incumbent premier is [Li Keqiang](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li_Keqiang), who is also a senior member of the CCP [Politburo Standing Committee](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politburo_Standing_Committee), China's _de facto_ top decision-making body.[\[206\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China#cite_note-224)[\[207\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China#cite_note-XiJinpingLiKeqiang-225)

In 2017, Xi called on the communist party to further tighten its grip on the country, to uphold the unity of the party leadership, and achieve the "Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation".[\[196\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China#cite_note-CDPD-214)[\[208\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China#cite_note-226) Political concerns in China include the growing gap between rich and poor and government corruption.[\[209\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China#cite_note-227) Nonetheless, the level of public support for the government and its management of the nation is high, with 80–95% of Chinese citizens expressing satisfaction with the central government, according to a 2011 survey.[\[210\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China#cite_note-228) A 2020 survey from the [Canadian Institutes of Health Research](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Institutes_of_Health_Research) also found that 75% of Chinese were satisfied with the government on information dissemination amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, while 67% were satisfied with its delivery of daily necessities.
