\*\*The Weekly Spin. _Third Edition._ \*\*Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day! It was only 13 years ago today, when some guy (Laszlo Hanyecz, who gets flashback trauma every year from degens and crypto n00bs all over the world) purchased (literally, scammed) two Papa John’s pizzas for 10k BTC – marking the first “real world” transaction completed with cryptocurrency. Actually, this has been proven to be untrue – as a user named Sabunir posted on the BitcoinTalk Forum that he was willing to sell a desktop wallpaper for 500 BTC (approximately $1 in 2010). This predates the pizza transaction to Jan. 24, 2010, and actually it was a JPEG that was purchased (ironic, isn’t it?). And I wonder why they don’t call it Two-pizzas day.

Anyhoo, the custom for this industry-wide annual celebration is to calculate today’s current value of those two pizzas: 10,000BTC currently equals **$266,630,600.00** = $133,315,300 dollars per pie. Let’s take it a step further and assume it was a typical large pizza, which would break down to just a little over $16 million a slice. Alas, the scammer got scammed.

Contrary to celebrations, it’s been 13 years – and what do we, as an industry, have to show for it? We’re arguing about whether apes should be allowed to be inscribed onto the original blockchain, we’re finally getting some regulatory clarity around the world outside of the US, who’s banking system collapse and national debt ceiling has set the scene for crazies like the honorable Gary Gensler to go around suing everyone with his endless war chest, political strife in almost every corner of the world, and everyone up in arms about every issue that involves the baby boomer generation, who is still diving head-first to beat the 1.5C global climate temperature increase limit. This technology is supposed to be able to solve the greatest problems facing humanity, but we’re too busy buying phallic frog coins and pulling rugs to actually make a difference. Do you think the AI sector, which has matured to an escape-velocity innovation rate, would take this long to make a globally changing impact? I don’t think so.
