How Elon Musk’s Acquisition of Twitter Expedites Web3’s Foundational Debates
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reconstructing internet products and services to benefit users instead of gatekeepers is a clear objective of web3. Although the destination and goal seem defined, the credence of decentralization is often idealized and over dogmatized. Currently, in web3, centralized, consolidation of devoted core teams are bearing more consistent outcomes. As the web3 plumbing continues to be built, or re-purposed, these objective driven cohorts will yield primary advantages.

The confluence of these archetypes can be appropriately applied to [Elon Musk](https://twitter.com/elonmusk)’s recent acquisition and remodeling of Twitter. If we are to have a proper “Digital Town Square,” where thoughts and ideas can flow and be debated freely, there needs to be an over-arching element of decentralization and user accountability. No truly democratic dialogue can exist without unrestrained participation.

Economist [Thomas Sowell](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Sowell) once said, “There are no solutions, just trade-offs.” We have yet to reach a global consensus on speech, and the internet is no exception. In fact, it seems to have intensified the discourse around tolerable rhetoric. We all know history repeats, rhymes, or whatever parable you prefer. Regardless, web3 and Twitter face the same existential woes inherited from the eternal web2 debate. Who dictates the parameters of public discourse? Have digital platforms become public utility or do they remain privately held entities? What role does government play in civic hyperbole?

Humans have been passing the ball regarding the laws of parlance from emerging technology to emerging technology since we began communicating. From the printing press to cave walls, we’ve determined which ideas are applicable and which are not. Regardless the vehicle, or variations of control, the rhythm and fluctuation of human discourse is in play. With every new iteration, the channels become more unrestrained, until they aren’t again. Thus, creating necessity and the inevitable push towards innovation.

Empowered by new technologies, the Web3 movement is spearheaded by a shift in how we, the collective, view and value the internet and each other. Without the foibles of traditional social media, how would we evolve to a vision of decentralization?
