In the last episode, I simplified the meaning of Business Development and people requested for me to create a series.
Welcome to today’s episode “The Art of Business Development EP 2: Business Development Essentials”.
Let’s discuss the three core functions of Business Development.
A project that wants to grow long term focuses on these functions:
➠ Developing business in new markets:
As a BD, you have to find new markets with high potential of giving your company massive profit. Either you create another product or service, or you take them to places that would sell more. This can be done through effective market research and trend analysis.
➠ Forging important connections:
Like they say, “If you want to go fast, you go alone, but if you want to go far, you go with people” This also applies in BD because solid connections have proven to be effective in businesses.
For example, if you farm airdrops, there are certain VCs and companies that would back the project, and you would be bullish to farm. Why? Because you know the partners of the project are SOLID CONNECTIONS due to their reputation. And the project tends to do well because of such partneerships So therefore, as a BD, strive to secure connections that would take your project to the next level.
➠ Raising the value of a client:
This simply means strengthening the relationship between your business and the client. You utilize what they offer, and also understand what they want and offer solutions to certain issues they face Also, by simply checking up on them regularly also helps to build connections.
A simple “Hello, hope you are okay and have a wonderful day” can make them smile and build connections because customers and clients are HUMAN too. This is part of Customer Relationship Management and i would explain that when the time comes.
Now, there are major factors considered in the Business Development stage. They are:
➠Market
➠Customers
➠Relationships.
Markets:
Market is simply a group of people who come together to buy and sell goods and services, and prices are determined by demand and supply. The market is very important because businesses take decisions due to how the market currently is (whether it is good or bad) By understanding the market, businesses can understand current trends and sentiments. Then, decide if it’s goods are enough by checking the demand for the product.
Customers:
People who buy products are called CUSTOMERS. Companies carry out research to find out it’s target audience and consumer base (i.e people who purchase their products) The research is by comparing rivals or survey analysis.
Relationships:
Relationships in business simply means partnerships that both parties benefit from. As i explained earlier, it is important for new market expansion and if done well, and can take the project to the next level.
Even if you don’t remember anything above, always know that Business Development have foundations which it is built on. Now, these foundations are:
➠ Value Generators:
Always find ways to provide value for the customers and the company
➠ Long term focus:
Steps and methods are implemented gradually and not too fast.
➠ Connections: Building very solid connections. BDs work with sales, marketing, product, project and vendor management. They ensure that all sides of the business experiences GROWTH.
We’ve come to the end of today’s episode so follow and stay tuned so you won’t miss the next one.
