“He who fails to plan, plans to fail"
There is no business that wants to succeed without having a plan. Or do they just go with the flow? Lmaoo. As a Business Developer, how do you create a sustainable plan to ensure the growth of your project?
Therefore, “The Art of Business Development EP 3: Creating a Business Plan”.
Alright, what’s a Business plan?
Business plan is simply a method that sees the general planning to run a successful business from start to finish. A business plan talks about your project’s goals, steps to achieve those goals, and your project’s structure. It covers everything, no stones left unturned!!
A business plan is also called a STRATEGY and it consists of 3 components:
➔ Business idea: You describe the sector for the business (e.g Tech, Agriculture, Health, etc.), how your organisation is, your good or service and your plans for success.
➔ The Marketplace: This focuses on the people who buy your product or service, CUSTOMERS. So how do you get them to buy from you? You categorise them based on demograph, where they live, why they buy your product and so on. And, in every business, there are always competitors, so you plan how to stand out and get your customers undivided attention.
➔ The Financial Area: This consists of the balance sheet, income and cash flow statement Basically calculating how the cash flows in, around and out of the business.
Now, why is a Business plan so important?
➠ Starting a new project or business: For start-ups, a business plan gives the direction that the project should follow, and the goals to be achieved. It’s highly essential for new businesses.
➠ Partnerships: A business plan shows potential partners your vision, strategy, and how they can benefit. Investors want to know if their money is safe and if it will generate profit. How will they find out if you don’t have a plan?
➠ Government assistance: To receive a loan or grant, government and other institutions request for a business plan. Why? Because they want to know if your business has the potential to succeed, and to be sure you don’t waste the loan.
➠ To improve the management of your business: With a plan and roadmap, you can track the current progress of your business, recognise achievements, allocate resources, and refine strategies. A plan helps you to check if your project is on the right track.
➠ To compare actual performance with expectations: You know when you create an idea, and it sounds too good to be true right? And when you execute it, it doesn’t work out, or it exceeds your epectations. By having a business plan, you’d measure your business execution, see the successes and the gaps that need to be filled.
Before you create a business plan, you need to note these things:
➢ A business notion (concept or idea): What kind of business are you creating?
➢ Information or proficiency (your experience): What business or work experience do you have?
➢ Industry or Demand: Is it tech, health, AI or food industry you’re business is in? How badly do people need what your business is offering?
➢ Finance and Capital: How much do you have to fund your business processes? ➢ Competition: What other businesses provides the same goods or services that your business does? How can your business stand out?
➢ Location, staff, tech: Where is your business located? Who are your workers and what tech tools can enhance your business?
After noting the above, if you desire to create a business, here’s a practical guide:
❁ Choose a name for your business and define it’s structure
❁ Create a solid business plan
❁ Create a business bank account
❁ Get the necessary licences and permits especially if its onsite.
❁ Employ the right workers
❁ Corporate identity
❁ Market and advertise your business.
As a business owner, If you want your business to stand out, it has to provide what others can’t Also, you should decide if you want to make your business a C-corp or Sole proprietor. Your lifestyle and attitude would be a major factor to determine that. We’ve come to the end of today’s episode.
If you learnt a lot, do well to retweet so others can learn too. See you at the next episode.
