**🔎 What is Optimism?**

Optimism is one of the layer 2 scaling solutions. It’s powered by a technology called Optimistic [rollups](https://www.coindesk.com/layer2/2022/02/16/ethereums-rollups-arent-all-built-the-same/), which bundle large amounts of transaction data into digestible batches. Optimism is [much cheaper](https://l2fees.info/) to use than Ethereum, and it’s increasingly becoming popular along with other layer 2s, such as [Arbitrum](https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2022/04/08/ethereum-rollup-arbitrum-releases-major-update/).

Optimism is governed by its eponymous token, or OP for short. A portion of the OP supply was [airdropped](https://www.coindesk.com/learn/what-is-a-crypto-airdrop/) to early Optimism users in late May 2022 in a [turbulent launch](https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2022/06/01/optimisms-op-token-plummets-after-botched-airdrop/). Developers behind Optimism said it would continue to airdrop more tokens.

📣 Following the first airdrop, Optimism has confirmed it will conduct a second airdrop, coined Drop #2.
