A **hamburger**, or simply **burger**, is a [sandwich](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandwich) consisting of fillings—usually a [patty](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patty) of ground meat, typically [beef](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground_beef)—placed inside a sliced [bun](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bun) or [bread roll](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bread_roll). Hamburgers are often served with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, bacon, or chilis; [condiments](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condiment) such as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, [relish](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relish), or a "[special sauce](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_sauce)," often a variation of [Thousand Island dressing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thousand_Island_dressing); and are frequently placed on [sesame seed buns](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bun). A hamburger patty topped with cheese is called a [cheeseburger](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheeseburger).[\[1\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamburger#cite_note-1)

The term _burger_ can also be applied to the meat patty on its own, especially in the United Kingdom, where the term _patty_ is rarely used or can even refer to ground beef. Since the term _hamburger_ usually implies beef, for clarity _burger_ may be prefixed with the type of meat or meat substitute used, as in **beef burger**, [turkey](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkey_as_food) burger, [bison](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bison) burger, [portobello](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portobello_mushroom) burger, or [veggie burger](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veggie_burger). In Australia and New Zealand, a piece of chicken breast on a bun is known as a **chicken burger**, which would generally not be considered to be a _burger_ in the United States; Americans would generally call it a [_chicken sandwich_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_sandwich), but in Australian English and New Zealand English a [_sandwich_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandwich) requires sliced bread (not a bun), so it would not be considered a _sandwich_.[\[2\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamburger#cite_note-Unilever-2)[\[3\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamburger#cite_note-3)

Hamburgers are typically sold at [fast-food restaurants](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast-food_restaurant), [diners](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diner), and other restaurants. There are many international and regional [variations](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hamburgers) of hamburger.
