**Victor-Marie Hugo** (French: [\[viktɔʁ maʁi yɡo\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/French) ([listen](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a6/Victor_Hugo.ogg)); 26 February 1802 – 22 May 1885) was a French [Romantic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanticism) [writer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Writer) and [politician](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politician). During a literary career that spanned more than sixty years, he wrote in a variety of genres and forms. He is considered to be one of the greatest French writers of all time.
