However, selenoprotein genes are almost universally misannotated in these datasets because UGA has the dual function of encoding Sec and terminating translation, and only the latter function is recognized by current annotation programs. Several bioinformatics tools have been developed to address this problem and can be used to identify selenoprotein genes .
