It was founded in 2013 by brothers Pavel and Nikolai Durov. Telegram is popular for its focus on privacy and security. It uses end-to-end encryption for messages, which means that only the sender and the recipient can read the messages, and not even Telegram can access them. Telegram also offers self-destructing messages, which disappear after a set time period. In addition to its messaging and voice-over-IP capabilities, Telegram also allows users to create and join channels, which are similar to chat rooms or groups, but can be publicly accessible. Telegram also supports file sharing, voice messages, and stickers. Telegram is available on multiple platforms including iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux. It has a large user base worldwide, with over 500 million monthly active users as of 2021.
