It's one of the cutest towns I've ever seen. The town is situated on the St. Marys River. Across the river is the state of Florida. It was first explored by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. A Spanish settlement in St. Marys was established in 1566. In 1763, the Treaty of Paris led to a land settlement exchange between Great Britain and Spain. That allowed for American colonials to settle the land and claim some as their own. The town of St. Marys was chartered in 1787. Twenty charter members each received four town lots and a marsh lot from the nearby marshes. The town lots were a total of four square acres each. By becoming charter members of St. Marys, each citizen had their name enshrined on a historical marker. Originally, the town had no name and there was some dispute about what to call it. That ended when the state of Georgia recognized the town as St. Marys in 1792. It was incorporated in 1802. St. Marys has a lot of history and culture. We think you'll like it.
