# DevRel Uni: Practical Lessons for Developer Relations

*Learnings from Cohort 6!*

From the moment we started with Trustless Work, I realized that Developer Relations (DevRel) would be the key to our success. Our API for trustless escrows depends on builders. Without them, there's no network, and without a network, there's no growth. DevRel is how we make that happen. This is why I started researching DevRel and bumped into DevRel Uni.

Thanks to the Arbitrum Foundation's scholarship, I joined this transformative program. It consisted of 6 classes and an intro workshop to Arbitrum Stylus. We also had assignments, most around creating content. I "failed successfully" on a challenge to do 22 posts—I managed 12, which is a success in itself! In fact, this article is my last homework!

DevRel Uni completely exceeded expectations. Each class gave me one specific, actionable insight into DevRel, from defining roles to scaling strategies. Here’s what I learned:

* **Bianca Buzea (Chronicle, DevRel Uni):** Provided a comprehensive primer on the diverse roles within DevRel and emphasized that success in this role depends on dedication.

* **Matt Hamilton (Arbitrum Foundation):** Introduced Arbitrum and Stylus, showcasing tools like Rust and C++ for EVM chains which is relevant for Trustless Work’s future EVM integration plans.

* **Kevin Blanco (Appsmith):** Shared impactful storytelling techniques for DevRel and offered practical advice for crafting messages, he is a fellow Costa Rican!

* **Coogan Brennan (Polygon):** Stressed the importance of teaching developers rather than marketing to them, highlighted the value of mental models, and showcased innovative approaches like creating kids’ books on zero-knowledge concepts. His "modern-day mapmakers" metaphor inspired us to map our developer journey, identifying barriers and transforming abstract goals into actionable strategies.

* **Austin Griffith (Buidl Guidl):** Demonstrated how playful, gamified tools can simplify Ethereum concepts and provided resources for accelerating dApp development.

* **Olayinka Oshidipe (Fleek):** Offered practical tips and frameworks for creating impactful video content.

* **Francesco Andreoli (Consensys):** Shared enterprise-grade insights into scaling DevRel, focusing on KPIs and strategies drawn from his extensive experience at Consensys.

Through these sessions, I gained actionable lessons that are directly shaping our strategy at Trustless Work:

* 🤝 Hackathons encourage innovation and real engagement, but you have to be intentional on following up.

* 📚 Clear documentation is vital for developer success.

* 🎥 Video tutorials can make complex ideas accessible, and require careful consideration on the purpose of the content itself.

* 📊 Frameworks for measuring success help refine strategies effectively.

At Trustless Work, we’ve already started applying what I learned. Inspired by Coogan’s concept of mapping the developer journey, we’ve pinpointed key gaps and opportunities. For example, our open-source campaigns with Only Dust are now built around this map, ensuring developers encounter fewer barriers and more value at every step.

Our Developer Journey Map. Work in progress.

**What’s next:**

Inspired by Francesco's KPIs, we're designing metrics to measure developer success across hackathons and campaigns. Additionally,

* 🚀 Experimenting with hackathons, creative campaigns, and open-source initiatives.

* 🔄 Iterating on our processes and onboarding more contributors to build a thriving developer community.

DevRel isn’t just about building relationships—it’s about creating ecosystems where developers thrive. At Trustless Work, this means empowering developers with the tools and support they need to innovate, connect, and drive the adoption of trustless technologies. Thanks to DevRel Uni, I feel ready to foster that environment for Trustless Work and beyond.

For anyone managing a developer-focused product or startup, I can’t recommend DevRel Uni enough.
