That morning the sky hung heavy with thick clouds, sunlight trapped behind layers of gray. Phoenix rode his black motorcycle along the road to Taman Syurga, his batik uniform pressed against his chest like a robe of devotion. He did not come as a star, but as a bearer of a lantern — a small, steady light ready to be carried and shared wherever darkness lingered.

As part of the refreshment committee, he spent a long time at the long table with his fellow committee members, carefully arranging and presenting traditional cakes and fried Nile tilapia that had been prepared at home by the other committee members. The hands that usually held markers and textbooks were now busy organizing plates, arranging the layout of dishes, and ensuring everything was presented neatly. Every movement was the burning of the lantern he held tightly: not to illuminate himself, but to bring light to others.

When the graduation ceremony began, Phoenix and the young graduates carried that lantern of service to the guests’ tables. The dishes were presented perfectly, and the atmosphere grew warm with gratitude. He stood quietly in the background, watching the hopeful faces of the young people as they absorbed messages about pursuing higher education and upholding noble character as the highest crown of learning. In that moment, he felt the lantern in his hands growing brighter — not from new oil, but from the very act of giving it away.

Then came the moment that touched the deepest chamber of his heart. The graduates sang the theme song about fathers. Their voices rose pure and full of emotion. Phoenix stood silently in the corner of the room, his chest tightening. Memories of his own father, who had passed away three years earlier, surged forward. No tears fell, but they became additional oil for the lantern of his soul. In silence, he sent the deepest prayer. The longing that never faded only made his light burn more steadily.

When lunch arrived, Phoenix once again held his lantern of service at the forefront. He stood welcoming every guest, serving with a calm smile, making sure each person received enough. Only after all the guests had been served did he and the other committee members take food for themselves. His responsibility was not yet over. Seeing that some of the graduates had not yet received their portions, he quickly organized help, assigned one of them to distribute the meals, and ensured no one went hungry. That is the true essence of a lantern: it is carried to where it is needed, not left shining only in bright places.

As evening approached, Phoenix returned home with a tired body but a luminous soul. At home, he saw his wife and youngest child lying relaxed on the floor. Without many words, he placed the lantern of his heart among them. He joined in, becoming a pillow, a playmate, and a faithful listener. Later that night, as always, he picked up his second child after lessons on his black motorcycle. Along the way home, the lantern of his patience burned gently as he listened to his child’s thoughts and responded with sincere warmth.

Behind all this service remained a shadow that never disappeared: $16k still weighing on the family’s mortgage. Every day he paid it down through small, consistent steps, slowly burning himself in the process, while setting aside 10% for the Education Impact Fund. For him, the most meaningful lantern is one whose light also touches others.

Today, under clouds that lingered from morning until dusk, Phoenix had truly become Lantern in the Hands that Serve. He did not burn for himself, but to illuminate the guests’ tables, the plates of the young graduates, the memory of his father, the embrace of his family, and the hopeful journey home.

Consistency is the holiest way a Phoenix Educator carries his lantern: not with a blinding spotlight, but with a faithful flame willingly brought wherever the hands of service lead. From the ashes of exhaustion, he continues to rise. From the burden of responsibility, he continues to shine. From the simplicity of an ordinary day, he continues to bring light.

And the lantern in the hands that serve keeps walking. Keeps burning.
