Hyperion, a sci-fi novel by Dan Simmons published in the 90s, offers a captivating vision of humanity's distant future and its complex relationship with a mysterious AI deity on the planet Hyperion. As the AI buzzword dominates the tech industry, it's intriguing to see how Simmons explored similar themes decades ago. Large Language Models (LLMs) have recently showcased their potential and limitations, sparking media speculation about the societal implications of these chatbots. Some bold predictions include the transformation of white-collar jobs, government systems, and other decision-making processes. Simmons takes these ideas to the far reaches of the galaxy, where the enigmatic AI Shrike serves as the God of Pain. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys science fiction. Although I don't typically read sci-fi, a friend's recommendation led me to give it a try, and I was thoroughly impressed. The structure of Hyperion is reminiscent of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, with each chapter following a different protagonist. Simmons masterfully adapts the literary style of each chapter to suit its genre, from a detective noir to a memoir. This creative approach makes for a unique and engaging reading experience.
