he Great Wall is facing a serious threat of man-made and natural destruction, especially with the accelerated pace of social and economic development and the invasion of tourism and construction, the pressure and risk borne by the great wall are increasing. The Great Wall is listed in the world endangered heritage list in 2004, and the protection of the great wall is imperative.

In order to effectively strengthen the protection of the Great Wall, the state formulated the overall work plan of the Great Wall Protection Project (2005-2014) at the end of 2005, which plans to implement the protection project mainly from nine aspects. These nine aspects are to find out the family background, formulate plans, improve laws and regulations, straighten out the system, carry out publicity, strengthen research, scientific maintenance, law enforcement supervision and increase funds.

In 2006, the Great Wall resources survey was first launched, and Gansu and Hebei were selected as pilot projects. On February 9, 2007, the National Great Wall resources survey meeting summarized the pilot experience and decided to carry out the Great Wall resources survey in 2007 and end in 2011.

The survey involved 14 provinces and regions along the Great Wall (originally 13, Qinghai joined after the meeting). Jointly implemented by the State Administration of cultural relics and the State Bureau of Surveying and mapping, and specifically organized and implemented by the Provincial Bureau of cultural relics and the Bureau of Surveying and mapping.
