# Web3 Explained

The internet has come a long way, meaning for “Web3” to exist, there is likely “Web2” and “Web1” right? Yes!

Before we dig into what Web3 is, let’s do a quick trip from past to present;

### 🔹 **Web1: 1990s to early 2000s**

We can also call this the “read-only web,” and here’s why:

*   Websites were static
    
*   You could read content but not interact with it; no commenting, liking and all that good stuff!
    

### 🔹 **Web2: 2000s to Present**

The Social Web era, which is what we have today!

*   You can interact with webpages and applications by sharing, commenting, liking and so on. Think what you do with social media like Facebook, X, YouTube.
    
*   While you use these platforms, big tech companies own and make billions off your data. oops!
    

### 🔹 Web3: The Future **yaay!**

a.k.a The Decentralized Web.

*   Decentralized means there is no central authority so you own your data
    
*   Transactions are peer-to-peer
    
*   It is built on the blockchain, while we will learn more about as we go… but you get the gist— ownership!
    

**Timi, what’s so special about Web3?**
---------------------------------------

*   **Decentralization**: like we learned earlier, no single company controls everything in Web3, so control is spread across users.
    
*   **Peer-to-Peer Transactions**: this means you don’t need banks or payment apps because crypto and smart contracts handle transactions automatically.
    
*   **Trustless With No Permission needed**: you won’t need to trust a company or get approval. Everyone can verify transactions.
    
*   **True Digital Ownership**: in Web3, you actually own your assets, unlike in Web2 where these platforms can delete or ban you.
    
*   **Earning💰**: you can earn in Web3 through crypto rewards, DeFi, that is decentralized finance, and DAOs, which are community-led projects.
    

**Use Cases of Web3**
---------------------

You must have heard of some of these, which I will elaborate on later, so here we go:

🔹 Cryptocurrencies, i.e digital money

🔹 DeFi (Decentralized Finance)

🔹 NFTs

🔹 DAOs

🔹 Metaverse

**Why should we care anyway 🤷‍♂️???**
--------------------------------------

For one, Web3 gives us control of our digital life! It is still early, but is growing really fast too. The question is, will you just watch it _happen_, or will you _partake_?

In Web3, no more giving away your data for free. You also have the potential for more financial freedom with Web3 so far you have the internet!
