Bocage's feverish temperament leads him to get involved with several women, having, however, only fallen in love with the muse Gertruria, whose real identity remains a mystery, but about which the names of Ana Gertrudres Marecos are being considered, a young woman from Santarém, and Gertrudes Margarida da Cunha de Eça Castelo Branco, wife of brother Gil Francisco.
