# What is RenVM?

RenVM provides one of the only scalable and practical interoperability solutions. It is also the only solution that allows secret computations with multiple inputs and multiple parties. RenVM is not a product or application per se, it is a network (and an accompanying SDK) that allows developers to bring cross-chain functionality to their DeFi applications.

    RenVM is powered by a network of machines called Darknodes, which are rewarded for contributing computing power and storage space.
    

RenVM is a network powered by a decentralized virtual machine. The virtual machine is replicated on thousands of machines that together power it, contributing their network bandwidth, computing power, and storage capacity. These machines are called dark nodes. Dark nodes receive a portion of the transaction volume through RenVM.

    RenVM enables permissionless value exchange between blockchains - bringing interoperability to DeFi.
    

This directly enhances the utility of DeFi by adding more liquid assets to the Ethereum ecosystem. Regardless of the DeFi application used, RenVM provides a native cross-chain user experience, enabling seamless and decentralized interoperability for the first time.
