**Valproate** (**VPA**) and its **valproic acid**, **sodium valproate**, and **valproate semisodium** forms are medications primarily used to treat [epilepsy](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epilepsy) and [bipolar disorder](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipolar_disorder) and prevent [migraine headaches](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Migraine_headache).They are useful for the prevention of seizures in those with [absence seizures](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absence_seizure), [partial seizures](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partial_seizure), and [generalized seizures](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generalized_seizure).They can be given [intravenously](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intravenous) or by mouth, and the tablet forms exist in both long- and short-acting formulation.
