# Farcaster Ecosystem

Farcaster is a decentralized social network built on the **Ethereum blockchain**, organized into three layers:

1.  **Farcaster ID**:  
    This layer manages user identity through **smart contracts on Optimism**. It governs usernames, account information, and cryptographic keys, with names managed both on-chain and off-chain using **Farcaster namespaces** or **Ethereum Name Service (ENS)**. Each user account is identified by a unique **Farcaster ID**, linked to their Ethereum address.
    
2.  **Farcaster Hub**:  
    The Hub is a **distributed network of nodes** that stores user data off-chain to ensure speed and efficiency. These nodes handle user messages (called **casts**) and synchronize data across the network, maintaining performance and reliability.
    
3.  **Farcaster Storage Rent**:

### **How Farcaster Works**

Users create accounts by connecting their **Ethereum addresses** and selecting usernames (via Farcaster or ENS). They sign and broadcast messages (casts) using private keys, which are validated and stored by the Hubs. These Hubs enable **user interactions, such as follows and reactions**, ensuring a **transparent and secure social network experience**.

Farcaster integrates deeply with Ethereum, enabling users to **interact with dApps** and participate in blockchain activities. The open ecosystem encourages developers to **build and integrate their own dApps**, enriching the platform’s features and services.
