### **About the Song**

The inspiration for this song dates back to about six months after my brother's passing.

While recovering from a tonsillectomy (and aided by postoperative pain meds), I experienced a rare window of vivid dreaming. I dreamt I was on a center stage, playing a piano, with an audience captivated by my performance. I woke up when I realized what I was singing: it was about not attending my brother's funeral.

After waking, I was struck by how clearly I could remember the music and lyrics, and I quickly wrote down everything I could recall.

For the past five years, I've been slowly piecing this song together, reflecting on my avoidance of going home.

My memories of [Scottsbluff, Nebraska](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottsbluff,_Nebraska), feel so strange compared to what I see in the news now—wildfires darkening the summer skies and the once lush Wildcat Hills turning dry.

I long to go back to visit, but I know it won't be the same as I remember.
