Vitalik's [endorsement on Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/191kke6/comment/kh7ekx3/?rdt=39203) ignited the discussion about raising Ethereum's gas limit. Developers and researchers are preaching caution in the shadow of EIP-4844, but whether the change is made in the short term is in the hands of proposers not developers.

The desires of users and validators are rarely aligned; users want low fees and validators optimize for higher yield. In scarce blockspace dynamics, the traditional theory to force higher yields has emphasized lowering throughput capacity to force users to compete for space. The state of Ethereum today is different, execution layer rewards are now dominated by MEV and private order flow. This MEV thrives when there are lots of other transactions to twist around, suggesting that by increasing the chain's capacity and driving more DeFi transactions, yields would increase as well.

In this evolving landscape, monitoring proposer signaling of gas limit adjustments allows us to see the beating heart of the Ethereum ecosystem. The use of blockchain data to meticulously track these signals not only ensures transparency but also demonstrates the integrity of the decentralized governance.

To identify proposers advocating for a gas limit increase, we consider only changes in the gas limit near the maximum interblock delta, and only those changes that take the network above the default client value of 30 million gas. Over the past two weeks we've seen a nearly 10x jump in proposers trying to push the gas limit up. Presently, this accounts for approximately 1 in 300 proposers, reflecting a notable shift in sentiment within the Ethereum ecosystem.

But who are these proposers?

To date, no major entities have signaled their support for raising the gas limit. The movement is being decentrally driven by both self-built blocks and proposers leveraging MEV-Boost. The only notable tagged proposer set is for.eth, who accounts for approximately 32% of signals.

Only time will tell whether proposers continue to wait for EIP-4844. or whether they take the situation into their own hands.
