**Aerosmith** is an American [rock](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_music) band formed in [Boston](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston) in 1970.[\[2\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-rockhall.com-2) The group consists of [Steven Tyler](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Tyler) (lead vocals), [Joe Perry](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Perry_\(musician\)) (guitar), [Tom Hamilton](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Hamilton_\(musician\)) (bass), [Joey Kramer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joey_Kramer) (drums) and [Brad Whitford](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brad_Whitford) (guitar). Their style, which is rooted in [blues](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues)\-based [hard rock](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_rock),[\[3\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-allmusic-3)[\[4\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-Aerosmith:_Biography:_Rolling_Stone-4) has also incorporated elements of [pop rock](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_rock),[\[5\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-5) [heavy metal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_music),[\[3\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-allmusic-3) [glam metal](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glam_metal),[\[6\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-Aerosmith_glam1-6) and [rhythm and blues](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhythm_and_blues),[\[7\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-Aerosmith:_Get_A_Grip:_Music_Reviews:_Rolling_Stone-7) and has inspired many subsequent rock artists.[\[8\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-Allmusic_%E2%80%93_Pop-metal-8) They are sometimes referred to as "the Bad Boys from Boston"[\[9\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-9) and "America's Greatest Rock and Roll Band".[\[10\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-Newman_20-10)[\[11\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-mtv.com-11)[\[12\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-NewHampshire-12)[\[13\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-Mieses_B.05-13) The primary songwriting team of Tyler and Perry is often known as the "[Toxic Twins](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxic_Twins)".

Perry and Hamilton, originally in a band together called the Jam Band, met up with Tyler, Kramer, and guitarist [Ray Tabano](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Tabano), and formed Aerosmith; in 1971, Tabano was replaced by Whitford. They released a string of multi-platinum albums starting with their [eponymous debut](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith_\(album\)) in 1973, followed by [_Get Your Wings_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Get_Your_Wings) in 1974.[\[14\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-The_Book_of_Golden_Discs_2-14) The band broke into the mainstream with [_Toys in the Attic_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toys_in_the_Attic_\(album\)) (1975) and [_Rocks_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocks_\(Aerosmith_album\)) (1976).[\[15\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-15) [_Draw the Line_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draw_the_Line_\(Aerosmith_album\)) and [_Night in the Ruts_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_in_the_Ruts) followed in 1977 and 1979. Throughout the 1970s, the band toured extensively and charted a dozen [Hot 100](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Hot_100) singles, including their first [Top 40](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_40) hit "[Sweet Emotion](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweet_Emotion)" and the Top 10 hits "[Dream On](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_On_\(Aerosmith_song\))" and "[Walk This Way](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walk_This_Way)". By the end of the decade, they were among the most popular hard rock bands in the world and developed a following of fans, often referred to as the "[Blue Army](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Army_\(Aerosmith\))".[\[16\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-autogenerated1-16) [Drug addiction](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drug_addiction) and internal conflict led to the departures of Perry and Whitford in 1979 and 1981.[\[4\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-Aerosmith:_Biography:_Rolling_Stone-4) The band did not fare well and the album [_Rock in a Hard Place_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_in_a_Hard_Place) (1982) failed to match previous successes.

Perry and Whitford returned to Aerosmith in 1984. After [a comeback tour](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_in_the_Saddle_Tour), they recorded [_Done with Mirrors_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Done_with_Mirrors) (1985), which did not meet commercial expectations. It was not until a 1986 collaboration with rap group [Run–D.M.C.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Run%E2%80%93D.M.C.) on a remake of "[Walk This Way](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walk_This_Way)", and the 1987 multi-platinum release, [_Permanent Vacation_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permanent_Vacation_\(Aerosmith_album\)), that they regained their previous level of popularity.[\[17\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-17) In the late 1980s and 1990s, the band won numerous awards for music from the multi-platinum albums [_Pump_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pump_\(album\)) (1989), [_Get a Grip_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Get_a_Grip) (1993), and [_Nine Lives_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_Lives_\(Aerosmith_album\)) (1997), while they embarked on their most extensive concert tours to date. Their biggest hits during this period included "[Dude (Looks Like a Lady)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dude_\(Looks_Like_a_Lady\))", "[Angel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_\(Aerosmith_song\))", "[Rag Doll](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rag_Doll_\(Aerosmith_song\))", "[Love in an Elevator](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_in_an_Elevator)", "[Janie's Got a Gun](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janie%27s_Got_a_Gun)", "[What it Takes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_It_Takes_\(Aerosmith_song\))", "[Livin' on the Edge](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livin%27_on_the_Edge)", "[Cryin'](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryin%27)", and "[Crazy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crazy_\(Aerosmith_song\))". The band also filmed popular music videos and made notable appearances in television, film, and video games. In 1998, they achieved their first number-one hit with "[I Don't Want to Miss a Thing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Don%27t_Want_to_Miss_a_Thing)" from [_Armageddon'_s soundtrack](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armageddon:_The_Album) and the following year, [their roller coaster attraction](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_%27n%27_Roller_Coaster_Starring_Aerosmith) opened at [Walt Disney World](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Disney_World). Their comeback has been described as one of the most remarkable and spectacular in rock history.[\[3\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-allmusic-3)[\[4\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-Aerosmith:_Biography:_Rolling_Stone-4) Additional albums [_Just Push Play_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_Push_Play) (which included the hit "[Jaded](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaded_\(Aerosmith_song\))"), [_Honkin' on Bobo_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honkin%27_on_Bobo) (a collection of blues [covers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cover_version)), and [_Music from Another Dimension!_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_from_Another_Dimension!) followed in 2001, 2004, and 2012. In 2008, they released [_Guitar Hero: Aerosmith_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_Hero:_Aerosmith), which is considered to be the best-selling band-centric video game. After five decades, the band continues to tour and record music. From 2019–2022, the band had a [concert residency in Las Vegas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith:_Deuces_are_Wild), which was interrupted from 2020–2021 due to the [COVID-19 pandemic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_pandemic).

Aerosmith is [the best-selling American hard rock band of all time](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_music_artists), having sold more than 150 million records worldwide, including over 85 million records in the United States.[\[18\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-Press_of_Atlantic_City-18)[\[19\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerosmith#cite_note-RIAA_%E2%80%94_Top_Selling_Artists-19) With 25 gold, 18 platinum, and 12 multi-platinum albums, they hold the record for the most total [certifications](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIAA_certification) by an American group and are tied for the most multi-platinum albums by an American group.
